Junior shortstop Katie Shea was selected as the 2002 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and named to the All-MAC second team. Three other teammates were named to the All-MAC second team as well.
"I am so happy and excited for Katie to be rewarded for something that she truly deserves," said head coach Terri Laux. "She has had a tremendous season. Katie has been consistent for us all year."
Shea hit a career-high .397 batting average, which was second highest in the MAC and 24th in the nation. She ranked among the top four in seven different statistical categories in the MAC. Defensively, she had a .945 fielding percentage including 64 putouts and 107 assists.
"For her to not only be recognized, but awarded such a high honor obviously says a lot about the respect that she has gained from the coaches of our conference," Laux said.
Sophomore teammates Kris Burdine, Britni Clark and Randi Freese were named to the All-MAC second team. Burdine started all 42 games this season with a .350 batting average and was among MAC leaders in hits, doubles, triples, runs scored and slugging percentage.
Clark received second team honors for the second straight season. She started all 42 games with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, 180 putouts, 42 assists and no errors. She threw out 13 runners attempting to steal.
Freese made eight appearances last season and finished this year the leader of the pack. The lefty ended the season with 10 wins, three saves, 107 strikeouts and a 2.64 ERA in 132.1 innings pitched. She was among MAC leaders in appearances, wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, games started and in shutouts.
The team finished its season with a 6-4 loss to Northern Illinois friday in the MAC tournament. It finished second in the MAC West-Division and ended with a 23-22 overall record.
