Women's squad gears up for Bronco invite

In the next week, the women's golf team will play in its final two events before the MAC Championships, starting with the Bronco Invitational hosted by Western Michigan on Sunday and Monday.

When the Cardinals compete in the Bronco Invitational, it will be only their second tournament of the spring and first since they played in the Snowbird Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla. March 14-15.

They were scheduled have a dual meet with Western Michigan and play in the Butler Spring Invitational two weeks ago, but both were canceled due to inclement weather.

"We're more anxious to play now because we have fewer opportunities to get out there and compete," head coach Shelley Sanders said.

The Bronco Invitational will be made up of mostly Mid-American Conference school, which makes it especially important, Sanders said.

"It's going to be a better field than we've faced," Sanders said. "It's going to let us see how we stand in the conference."

"Whenever you play in a MAC tournament, you always know where you stand afterward," sophomore captain Lisa Robertson said. "It shows what you need to do to move up in the conference.

"(This tournament) will be an indication of what we need to do to get better."

After finishing the Bronco Invitational on Monday, the team plays again Thursday through Saturday in the Lady Colonel Classic at Eastern Kentucky.

Sanders said the team prefers to have tournaments close to one another.

"We prefer to have more competitive rounds spaced more closely," Sanders said. "It helps with our continuity and allows us to get on a roll.

"The back-to-back events will help us."

Sanders also said fatigue should not be a factor in the team's play.

She said the Cardinals will only shooting one round a day, which is no different than practice.

"I think (the players) will be tired after both events are finished, but the competition will be beneficial to us," Sanders said.

Robertson said, "We're looking forward to these two meets. It's always good to be in a competitive tournament environment."
