Letter to the editor: Student reflects on years at Ball State as graduation looms

Dear editor:

Just like any student, I've always dreamed about going to college and getting a degree from a University. But I'm not like any college student. I'm a student with cerebral palsy. Although I may look different to most people, I'm not. I have the same goals and desires as anyone. But my No. 1 goal is to graduate from Ball State.

I am a senior finishing my last semester at Ball State. It has been a struggle for me. Going to college is hard for anyone, but for me it's a little bit harder. Being a person who has a disability, I take fewer classes than the average student. I also have to worry about finding attendants to take care of me throughout the day. Most college students don't have to worry about things like this, but I do.

I chose Ball State for many reasons, but the No. 1 reason is its accessibility. Ball State is really accessible to my needs. I use a power wheelchair to get around campus. For the most part, Ball State is pretty accessible except in the winter.

Another reason why I chose to come to Ball State is its special education program. Ever since I was little, I've wanted to study special education. I don't want to be a special education teacher, but I would like to work in the special education field.

As I look back on the years that I've spent here, I'm happy for what I accomplished. Though some years have been harder than others, I have to say that I wouldn't change anything. I've really enjoyed my college years, but I'm looking forward to moving into the "real" world. So, my years here at Ball State are coming to a close, but I will never forget my time spent here.
