The Scramble Light and high-traffic areas around campus Wednesday morning were abuzz with the sounds of those voicing their opinions about controversial issues.
Topics ranging from anti-abortion, women's liberation and Christianity were all voiced in public forum. The signs and posters depicting aborted fetuses hung on campus street corners were from a Christian group from Wisconsin called Missionaries for the Pre Born. The group travels the country spouting their beliefs to all those who are present.
By mid-afternoon, the group was asked to leave the campus by University Police. The graphic nature of the posters, however, had nothing to do with whether these types of groups are allowed to demonstrate on campus.
The group was asked to leave because they did not comply with university regulations. You have the right to assemble and protest, but to do so on university grounds, it must be registered. The Missionaries for the Pre Born did not take that step.
As disturbing and outlandish as these words and pictures may seem to some, these groups have the right to voice their beliefs in public. If you disagree with their messages, or if you feel strongly about your own beliefs - you have the right to assemble and state your message in public.
The First Amendment gives you that right and not enough people take advantage of one of the greatest gifts of American democracy.
