Colts owner Jim Irsay stood before a board of appeals Monday, not to face criticism from football fans, but from his own neighbors.
Irsay appeared before the Carmel-Clay Board of Zoning Appeals requesting permission to use his 10-seat, twin-engine helicopter and personal helipad in his backyard for business purposes. According to the Associated Press, Irsay told the board it impresses free agents.
"If you land them into your property and you entertain them, that's a huge difference. I'm trying to bring us a Super Bowl. This adds a lot to it."
Complaints have been made by Irsay's neighbors because of the noise from the helicopter. Last year Irsay was told he would need zoning approval, and the board has put off a decision until next month.
Hopefully a compromise will be reached by Irsay and his neighbors. Yes, Irsay needs to be impressing free agents and persuade them to join the Colts organization, but do it because of the fact that the Colts has a quality organization, not because the owner has a cool toy.
Besides, it will take a lot more than a helipad to bring a Super Bowl to Indianapolis.
