As the women's golf team heads into its final event before the MAC Championships, the Lady Colonel Classic, hosted by Eastern Kentucky, they are focused on confidence.
"Each time we compete we gain confidence," head coach Shelly Sanders said. "I hope it continues into this tournament."
The Lady Colonel Classic on Thursday through Saturday comes just three days after the team finished the Bronco Invitational at Western Michigan. Although the Cardinals have a short lay-off, Sanders said she prefers it that way.
"I actually like for the team to play back-to-back like this," Sanders said. "It helps us stay on a roll, stay competitive and stay in the right state of mind."
Since two of the team's events were canceled this spring due to severe weather, Sanders is thankful for every chance to play, even if it is right after the last event.
"We haven't had many opportunities to compete, so every opportunity helps," Sanders said. "This is going to help us prepare for the MAC Championships.
Despite a disappointing performance in the Bronco Invitational, finishing eighth of 10 teams, the Cardinals remain confident going into the Classic.
"We want to win this tournament, and we know we can," freshman Natalie Dallas said.
Sanders said the team is determined to do better this tournament after it performance in its last tournament. She said that confidence is a major factor in how the team performs.
"We just need to remain in confidence," Sanders said. "It's really all about confidence."
"All we need to do is get our confidence up," Dallas agreed. "We would win the tournament if we did."
Dallas also said the team is more relaxed because other teams in the tournament and in the conference look past the Cardinals or counts them out.
"No one expects us to do anything," Dallas said. "That takes a lot of pressure off of us."
The Cardinals' goal for their final regular-season meet is to put together at least four good scores to count toward the team total in two of the three rounds. This is something the team has yet to do this spring.
"The team is determined to do well," Sanders said. "I expect them to have a good tournament."
