Students debut films in campus premiere

Chicago band 'Kitchen Queens' scheduled to play music after movie showcase.

If you ever had the feeling that you were being watched or thought you saw a flying object soaring above you, it may have been student film makers David Hamilton and Morgan Mead filming their movies which will premiere tonight at Pruis Hall at 7.

The evening will begin with Mead's short comedy "Space Aces: Academy" followed by a short break before Hamilton's feature, "Silence," will be screened. After both films, "Kitchen Queens," a band from Chicago, will be showcasing their music.

Mead's short film has a running time of 27 minutes. Mead describes it as the first graduating class of ten from a space flight school whose final project is go out to different planets as a race to see who finishes first.

"It's really funny, basically it's laughing at other people's expense," said Mead, a sophomore telecommunications major with an emphasis in production. "It's a light-hearted adventure. It's a movie, but it's more entertainment."

Some of the filming for this movie was shot in Muncie, but most of it was done on the computer using graphics. Mead built a full-size cockpit, complete with light and all sorts of fun gadgets. Mead also had costumes and a helmet made for the film.

Mead said that the best way to describe it is "a 27-minute vacation."

Lead roles in "Space Aces: Academy" include Chris Roe, Annette Reynolds, and David Hamilton.

After a brief ten-minute intermission, complete with half-time show, Hamilton's movie "Silence" will be viewed for the first time.

"Silence" is a 70-minute thriller about a man that is being haunted by creatures. Hamilton describes these creatures as mythical beings that no one knows about.

"I was always a fan of the ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances, so it's about an ordinary guy who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances," said Hamilton, a sophomore telecommunications major with an emphasis on production.

Hamilton said that the idea of the movie came from a nightmare that he had when was 10.

"I had a nightmare that this devil was chasing me around, and he took my voice away. And no matter how much I screamed for help, no one could hear me," said Hamilton explaining the title and movie.

Hamilton said that he wants it to have the same feel as "Jaws" which the image of a Goliath preying on every man. However, Hamilton said that it's not meant to be a scary movie.

"It's not a scary movie, it's a thriller with a lot of suspense," said Hamilton. "I just want people to leave with a smile on their face."

Though this may be a movie that might lead patrons to become paranoid, Hamilton stresses that this movie is not supposed to scare people.

While Mead's film is mostly special effects, Hamilton's film is all camera angle's and cinematography.

"I think the key to good cinematic-looking films is the moving camera ... , so I try to vary the shots and move the camera around.

Lead roles in "Silence" go to Chris Roe, Rex Alan Clifton Jr. and Kirsten Day. Roe was also in the movie that Hamilton and Mead collaborated on last year, "Gateway." Supporting roles feature Kevin Murphy and Samantha Eileen Deturk.

"The actors were a lot of fun to work with," said Hamilton. "Sam (Deturk) did exceptionally well ... . She gave it everything."

After both films "Kitchen Queens" will preform. Mead said that they are one of the best small-time bands, and that people from Ball State already know about them. The band has an alternative rock sound.

"Just come and have fun, cut loose while you watch us be goofy for a while," Hamilton said.
