Song, dance dominate Greek Week variety show

Sorority women danced to Britney Spears and fraternity men sang songs from Pearl Jam, but it was a saxophone duet written by composer Pierre Dubois that stole the heart of the crowd Thursday night at the Greek Week Variety Show.

Theta Chi members Eddie Rich and Ryan Muncy received a standing ovation from the Pruis Hall crowd of nearly 400 after they played an altered version of Dubois' "Perpetual Motion." Rich and Muncy incorporated music from "Dueling Banjos," "Lowrider" and "Get Your Freak On" to suit the crowd.

"('Perpetual Motion') is sort of straight-forward and we decided we needed to add a little bit for the crowd just to make it fun," Muncy said.

Freshman Stephanie Rider of Sigma Sigma Sigma said Rich and Muncy were her favorite performers.

"I liked the saxophones," she said. "It was just awesome."

The variety show featured 15 acts that included vocal solos, vocal duets, piano performances, guitar performances and dance groups.

Ball State alumnus Mike Polites emceed the show and warmed up the rowdy crowd by making fun of his small stature.

"I recently got a job working as a bouncer," Polites said, "at a Toys R Us."

Andy Rago and Craig Moore, both of Theta Chi, opened the show with a version of Pearl Jam's "Yellow Leadbetter." Rago performed a flawless guitar solo as the crowd cheered him on.

According to show coordinator Lisa Liaromatis, an Alpha Chi Omega senior, the Theta Chi fraternity represented a large portion of the men's performances.

Other highlights include Delta Sigma Theta's dance routine and Jason Lebar's rendition of Frank Sinatra's "You Make Me Feel So Young."
