Rector focuses farewell address on accomplishments of others

As the final minutes of the Rector administration came to a close, then-Student Government Association President Tommy Rector gave his farewell address Wednesday.

Rector not only listed his own accomplishments but focused on those of the Senators among heartfelt gratitude and light-hearted anecdotes.

"Traditionally, presidents use this time to talk about their accomplishments," Rector said. "Today I would like to talk about yours."

He went on to tell SGA its achievements moved mountains, listing a variety of on- and off-campus efforts. Rector said SGA was near helping to raise student wages by 50 cents. Administrative action is being taken based on a legislative initiative for improving safety in campus parking lots.

SGA supported an off-campus housing code being read at the Muncie City Council meeting April 1, giving "area slumlords a run for their money," he said.

He also congratulated SGA for its decisions about controversial issues.

"You helped keep tailgating alive until a solution can be worked out and strengthened student attendance at athletic events by 25 percent," Rector said.

Among more national efforts, Rector said SGA delivered support material and more than $5,000 to New York City after Sept. 11.

After acknowledging the Senate, he went on to call his slatemates "brilliant people who will do great things in this world."

He acknowledged former Treasurer Michael Spear, to whom Rector attributes the organization and accuracy of the SGA budget. Rector called Ashley Furnival the heart of the organization for her many efforts as secretary.

Rector said there was no one he was more proud to hand the presidency to than his vice president, Tolu Olowomeye.

"She always seems to have not her own personal interests in mind, but those of the student body," he said. "I am honored she invested her time with us, and wish her nothing but the best of luck."

Of his presidency, Rector said he is not ready to leave but knows his time is up and he is confident in Team Tolu.

"I know they will not work for themselves, but for the students of Ball State University," Rector said.
