Jowery's candies are hand dipped by eight women daily, offering an alternative to other store-bought candy.
Lowery's Candies, 6255 W. Kilgore Ave., is a family-owned and operated business.
"My father's cousin started the business in 1941, and then my parents bought it in 1964 and then moved the business from Main Street to its present location behind the house they lived in," said Vicki Good, general manager. "I started working at the store in high school in 1965 and began working part time 25 years ago. My parents are semi-retired, but they like to stay active and they are still involved in it.
"The candy is all handmade and dipped. It is done the same way it was done in 1941."
Good said candy follows an involved process before it is sold.
"It is placed in a burner and then put in a depositer and then it comes out in little balls," she said.
The candy is then hand-dipped.
Lowery's offers 80 different kinds of candies ranging from milk or dark chocolate and assorted bon bons.
They have three kinds of assortments that they keep pre-packed, which range in price from $10.15 to $11.15.
"We also allow customers to pick and choose what they would like, she said. "Our customers like the option of being able to pick and choose what they want."
Their bestseller candies vary depending on the season but Good thinks Lowery's best-selling cremes are probably vanilla and peanut butter. In nut pieces their best-sellers are toffee and tiger paws, which are similar to turtles.
Lowery's has 20 full-time employees but at busy times such as Christmas, when they are the most busy, they can go up to 35 employees.
Good's mother, Thelma Brown, said, "At Christmas time we have one company that buys $12,000 worth of candy that he mails to his customers and that kind of thing."
For those who are diabetic or unable to eat sugar for other reasons, Lowey's also offers sugar-free candy, but it is not made in-house.
Good said Lowery's also offers treats for Easter.
"We make four separate sizes of hollow eggs and you can put your favorite kinds of candy inside," she said. "We have molds and make bunnies and use pastels for Easter."
Lowery's is closed during the summer months, to prevent the melting of the candy.
The store's hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call Lowery's at 288-7300.
