Today at 4 p.m. in TC 101 the University Senate will be meeting to announce the official date for the next academic year's Fall Break.
Typically the timing of Fall Break isn't of great importance, but if no one opposes the planned Oct. 14-15 Fall Break, then one of Ball State's greatest traditions - Homecoming - will be compromised.
Because of the extensive planning involved with creating a successful Homecoming, the date for Homecoming week is already set and publicized. Therefore, it would be extraordinarily difficult to change the week of events this late in the year.
It is for this reason that students should come to TC 101 today and support a proposal that will be made by a Student Government Association Senator to change Fall Break to Oct. 10-11, which falls on the Thursday and Friday before Homecoming week.
Ball State is one of the few remaining universities that still have a planned Homecoming week. Since 1957 students have planned and been active participants in Homecoming week at Ball State. If Fall Break was set for Oct. 14-15, then students, faculty, and alumni would lose two days of a weeklong tradition we have been celebrating for 44 years.
Show support today for a proud tradition at Ball State by being present at the University Senate session. There is nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Fall Break will occur either way, but if the date isn't changed Homecoming will not be the same.
