James C. Lintzenich, the former head of an Indianapolis-based educational loan company, was inducted into the College of Business Hall of Fame at the college's annual awards dinner Nov. 2.
"It's quite the kudos for Ball State to have a graduate like him," said Lynne Richardson, dean of the College of Business. "It was really great to recognize his achievement with this year's award."
Lintzenich, who was appointed as chief executive officer in 1997 for USA Group, led the company through its merger with Sallie Mae in July 2000. He served as president and chief operating officer of the new holding company, USA Education, until April 2001, and continues to serve on the board of that company.
Currently, Lintzenich is on the board of directors of the Lumina Foundation, the United Way of Central Indiana, AdminiStar Federal and MetroBanCorp.
Membership in the Hall of Fame is the highest honor given by the College of Business. Nominees must meet several criteria, including holding a position of distinction in business, government or academy, demonstrating outstanding success in his or her field, being a recognized civic leader, displaying extraordinary +âservice to human kind and graduating or holding an honorary degree from Ball State.
"His leadership in USA Group and the vision he showed in merging that with Sallie Mae certainly showed that he was qualified for this award," Richardson said.
Lintzenich, who joins such business leaders as Kent "Oz" Nelson, chairman and CEO of UPS, and Don Marsh, chairman and CEO of Marsh Supermarkets in the Hall of Fame, is the 32nd inductee since the award's inception in 1974.
