Picture the following scenario -- boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl and decides to bring his parents to meet her. Boy and girl find out that they have two completely different lifestyles once their families meet, and things don't quite work out as expected.
"You Can't Take it With You," a production by Ball State's Theatre and Dance department, follows that scenario.
Erin Ordway will play Alice, a sophisticated and eccentric young girl who is engaged to Tony, played by Bryan Campbell, as a down to earth and straight-laced guy.
This look at romantic relationships takes a more interesting turn when Tony decides to bring his parents to meet his future bride and her family. That is when the differences of the two families really come into conflict give the story a humorous flavor.
"This is a funny, heart-warming story about the values of love and respect that make families strong," managing director Bill Kovacsik said.
Kovacsik said 19 Ball State students make up the cast and the group has been rehearsing five nights a week for the past six weeks.
"It's a classic American comedy," he said. "Students should expect a good time and expect to be entertained."
This production also has a guest director, Karen Kessler, an ensemble member of the Famous Door Theatre in Chicago.
Tickets for the show remain on sale at the University Theatre Box Office at $5 for students, $9 for senior citizens, $11 for Ball State faculty and staff and $12 for the general public. The first show is tonight at 8 in University Theatre. Performances run through Saturday, each at 8 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m.
