Who came and left under President Ferguson?

A number of key university officials came and went under Ball State President Paul W. Ferguson’s tenure.

Julie Hopwood

Here is a list of who left, and who filled those positions.

Randy Howard

Position: Former vice president for business affairs and treasurer

Left the university: Summer 2014

Howard departed for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Ferguson's term didn't start till Aug. 1, 2015, however. This position handles the university’s finances.

Bernie Hannon

Position: Current vice president for business affairs and treasurer.  

Started: Spring 2015

Hannon served as associate vice president for business affairs and assistant treasurer prior to this appointment. 

Julie Hopwood

Position: Ferguson’s chief of staff

Started: Fall 2014

Hopwood came with Ferguson to Ball State. She had worked alongside him for more than 12 years. They first started working together when she was his graduate assistant at the University of Nevada, when he was the vice president for research and graduate studies.

Julie Halbig 

Position: Associate vice president for governmental relations 

Appointed: Fall 2014

Halbig works as the university’s liaison to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and other state agencies.

Tom Taylor

Bill Scholl

Position: Former Ball State athletic director

Left the university: September 2014

He was the director since 2012. He left to take the athletic director position at Marquette University. 

Mark Sandy

Position: Current athletic director 

Started: Feb. 1, 2015

Sandy is the former athletic director for Eastern Kentucky.

Tom Taylor

Position: Former vice president for enrollment, marketing and communications 

Left the university: January 2015

Tony Proudfoot

Position: Former associate vice president for marketing and communication and spokesperson for the university

Left the university: January 2015

The university’s strategic communications department has since restructured since Proudfoot and Taylor's departures. Their positions have since changed to varying degrees and don't exist in the same capacity. Hopwood oversaw the restructuring of this department.

Gene Burton

Position: Former Ball State police chief

Retired: August 2014

Burton retired after serving at the university for 34 years. 

James Duckham

Position: Current Ball State police chief

Started: December 2014

Duckham was the former assistant chief of police before stepping into Burton’s position.

Jennifer Jones-Hall

Position: Former director of student life and adviser to the Student Government Association

Resigned: March 2015

Her resignation came after, while not necessarily in connection with, she made comments about the selection of the John R. Emens Outstanding Senior Award winner.

Jennifer Jones-Hall

Jones-Hall said in the email: “The Big 4 are not making comments [about the Emens Outstanding Senior Award] because the[y] are funded through the University and so is SGA. I would be careful not to bite the hand that feeds you. My two cents.”

She apologized for these remarks.

The university never confirmed that her resignation was in connection to her comments.

Melissa Ginotti 

Position: Current director of student life, adviser to SGA and assistant vice president for student affairs

Hired: Nov. 17, 2015

Jon Lewis

Position: Former director of campus dining services

Died: Oct. 2, 2015 

Lewis died unexpectedly in his home. He was 61. Ball State has not hired a replacement for Lewis.

Michael Goldsby 

Position: Current chief entrepreneurship officer

Appointed: Fall 2015

Ferguson created this position with the goal of achieving the entrepreneurship ideals he set forth in his vision for the university.

Pete Lembo 

Position: Former head football coach

Resigned: Dec. 22, 2015

He’s now the assistant head coach at the University of Maryland. Lembo breached his contract with Ball State by leaving for Maryland. Maryland picked up the $200,000 tab. 

Mike Neu

Position: Current head football coach

Started: Jan. 7, 2016

Neu is a former Ball State quarterback.
